Ka Sail Vic Moth Grand Prix – Round three wrap up
|
The other weekend the International Moth Class Association of Victorian held round three of the Ka Sail Grand Prix on the 50th Opening Day of Mount Martha Yacht Club, on the Mornington Peninsula. The winds were a nice 12 to 16 knots with managable waves from the south west and a nice low 20s temp. 3 races were held to consistitue the round. The competition was hot as everyone had at least one stack from the pressure! With a growing fleet in Victoria, the Moth Class is regaining it’s roots. The designs of Moth raced were the Mach2 & Bladerider. With 8 starters on a line, some of the more popular classes on the water were wondering whether they should upgrade! It was a shame the other Victorian Moths couldn’t make the event. Race one became a bit of a spread out affair as few were late for the start. With over 50 boats on the water, we started first and turned some heads. The course was set as a long beat with return through a gate, finishing off the club. However this confused a few too competitors in the first race. Andrew ‘Amac’ McDougal cleaned up the fleet with the first of three wins. The rest of the fleet is quite even at stages in the race. Richard, Sam, James, Kohei and Lochy were all of similar speed at some point on their Mach2s. The Bladerider starters Gus & Stuart were learning the trade and doing very well. The second race was very close to the first mark with everyone putting in a great first beat. Great if your coming from behind type feeling. The waves were always going to sort out the drivers from the divers today. There weren't that many stacks, but they cost allot of places! Race three was a great start. Most of the fleet took off at once on the line foiling. Another snakes and ladders beat with a few shifts on the way. The differences in the boats speeds seemed extreme at various times, but most of the differences were from the helm. The minor places in all of the races were taken by Koheio & Richard in that order. Some great prizes were provided by supporting sponsors Magic Marine and Seldén. The current standings of the Ka Sail IMCAV Grand Prix can be found here: Ka Sail IMCAV Google Spreadsheet The Victorian Moth Fleet now takes a break until the next round scheduled later in the season next year. Some of the Victorian fleet however will be making the trip up north to complete this weekend in Sail Sydney. This will be the last big event prior to the 2013 Australian Championship to be held on Lake Macquarie at Wangi from January 6th to 12th. The fleet expected to compete this weekend will represent most of the states in Australia and will provide great entertainment for the event during a Dash for Cash off Woollahra Sailing Club this Saturday from 5pm.
