Fareastsails.com Summer series at Liverpool YC

by Jim Connolly. on 17 Aug 2008
Liverpool Yacht Club held the fifth race of the Fareastsails.com Summer series on Sunday August 3rd. Race Officer Paul Boycott had the unenviable task of setting a meaningful course for Summer 5 inasmuch as the tide range was great at a high tide level of 9.82 metres and a wind of little more than 5 knots.

However with a forecast of improving wind strength, Paul set a bold course up river to E2 across to Midway up to G 9 across to E4 back across to G 5 where a shortened course was needed to give yachts a chance to finish.

However a great tactical battle was joined towards E4 with Stuart Lofthouse’s Impala Skukusa and John D’Henin’s Starlight 30 Quilla electing a route to E4 down the Garston Channel from G9 and The ‘F’ Word, the new Farrell family flying machine, Malcolm Blair’s Hunter 707 Loose Elastic, and Steve Harrison’s Sigma 33 Quattro favouring the Eastham side.

This week the Eastham side turned out to be the better option (unlike Monday’s race, when the opposite was true. (Who’d be a Mersey yachtsman?)

The ‘F’ Word for Class 1 crossed the line in front. Quattro was a minute behind to win Class 2 followed by Loose Elastic, Skukusa and Quilla.

Clarevouyant and Catch 32 were neck and neck throughout the race with Clarevouyant pipping Catch 32 by 4 seconds in Class 3.

Leading Results:

Class 1
1st. Andy Farrell’s The 'F' Word

Class 2
1st. Steve Harrison’s Sigma 33 Quattro
2nd. Malcolm Blair’s Hunter 707 Loose Elastic
3rd. Stuart Lofthouse’s Impala Skukusa

Class 3
1st. Andy Atkinson’s Achiles 24 Clarevouyant
2nd. John Myerscough’s Sadler 32 Catch 32
