At the 51st International Cadet Australian Championships, after being out on the water for quite a few hours on Christmas Eve, the Race Committee was very unfortunate to not get a single race in! Unexpected wind shifts followed by some strong squalls put an end to any races being completed.
All the sailors had a relaxing lay day on Christmas Day as well as the amazing volunteers and race management personnel! The winds on Boxing Day were took their time coming in but eventually Race 4 of the Championships finally got under way. With three races to get in, Nick Hutton, the Race Officer continued with his Black Flag starts! Unfortunately, there was a General Recall, and it proved costly for several crews who were caught on the wrong side of the line in the last minute!
Race 4 eventually got started around 12:30pm in an easterly and around 12 knots. UKR9905 - Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk were in an unbeatable position from the first downwind leg. With each spinnaker run they stretched their lead further and further. It was great to see another couple of RGYC boats in the top three. The final results for Race 4 were:
1. UKR9905 – Tasmania Devil - Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk
2. AUS9698 – Wildcard – Liam Robinson and Nathan Field - RGYC
3. AUS9523 – Brother in Arms – Darcy Baranowski and Dominic Randall - RGYC
Race 5 saw the UKR9905 crew repeat their performance of the previous race and once again pull away from the rest of the fleet on the first downwind leg, In this race though it was the Sandy Bay Sailing Club crews of Charlie Connor and Ethan Galbraith and Sam Tiedemann and Hugo Allison who were trading second and third places throughout the whole race and managed to get ahead of Wildcard and Brothers in Arms from RGYC. The final results for Race 5 were:
1. UKR9905 – Tasmania Devil - Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk
2. AUS9531 - Phoenix – Sam Tiedemann and Hugo Allison – SBSC
3. AUS9699 – Sirocco – Charlie Connor and Ethan Galbraith – SBSC
The final race of the day saw another four Black Flag disqualifications. The wind had picked up to between 12-15 knts and once again we saw the domination of the UKR9905 crew who took the lead very early on! It was good to see SBSC boat Meltemi, crewed by Oliver Burnell and Isabelle Declerk up amongst the leaders. The final results for Race 6 were:
1. UKR9905 – Tasmania Devil - Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk
2. AUS9562 – Meltemi - Oliver Burnell and Isabelle Declerk – SBSC
3. AUS9698 – Wildcard – Liam Robinson and Nathan Field - RGYC
Day four of racing looks like it will be an exciting day where all results will matter right down to the last race to decide the Championship. Four races are scheduled for tomorrow. The final results tomorrow will determine the top 14 crews that will represent Australia in the subsequent World Championships being hosted by Sandy Bay Sailing Club. Further, the top seven crews will be selected to represent Australia at the 2013 World Championships to be held in Belgium in July 2013.
The standings at the end of day three are as follows:
