ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres – Will the Postman deliver?

'Pieter-Jan Postma - 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres'    Thom Thow Photography

At the ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres, after recording a 57th placing yesterday afternoon, the Dutch sailor - Pieter-Jan Postma (PJ) still had the biggest smile in the Finn class boat park this morning, as he continues to hold the class lead.

31 year old Postma is a Finn veteran. He was 14th at the 2008 Olympics in Qingdao. At Postma’s second Olympic appearance was at the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth. In this competition, in the drama filled medal race, he was tracking towards the Gold Medal, but a rounding infringement cost him dearly and he finished fourth overall.

Postma has done little Finn sailing since, he is trying out for a Volvo Ocean Race slot about the Dutch entry Team Brunel and is hoping to do the 2014-2015 circumnavigation as well as continuing his Finn campaign for Rio.

He has sailed very consistently in this regatta with a worst result a ninth up to that race. 5 9 1 2 1 1 (57) 6 2 2

Yesterday was his first bad race, as he explains. ‘I was around tenth or 12th at the top mark and then my halyard broke. I tried to fix it as I went downwind and I finished the race but I only had three boats behind me. Then I needed to fix it and it took us 15 minutes or so and I only had one more minute before the race so it was really close. A lot of people helped and in that last race I was sixth'.

Today he was back in the groove with two seconds.

'The British squad is already in La Rochelle, training for the European titles. For them it’s a very important event as it will decide which set of British Finn sailors go to Rio for the test event.

'As the Brits are very strong, right now I don’t know if I am 1, 2 or 3 on form.

'As I have not raced a lot over the last year this was the best training for the Europeans to get back into racing. I have got some new sails for the Europeans. The British will be fast and they will be sure going full speed for the Europeans.

However this regatta has given me a lot of confidence and I believe I can deliver when the time comes'.
