by Peter Campbell on 30 Dec 2007
The Mumm 36 Host Plus Executive, skippered by Jeff Cordell from Bellerive Yacht Club has taken line honours in the inaugural Clive Peeters Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race.
She crossed the finish line off Hobart’s Castray Esplanade this morning at 4:33am to become the first winner of this new major offshore yacht race in the Australian sailing calendar.
Nick Edmunds’ Adams/Radford 12 Haphazard and the multihull Dequello have also finished the 280 nautical mile race from northern to southern Tasmania around the east coast.
Host Plus Executive is currently in the box seat for a double win as her elapsed time of 42 hours and 33 minutes has her on track for a handicap win as well as taking the gun for line honours.
The only yacht still a possibility that some of the smaller competitors such as Lock on Wood will steal back the handicap trophy as they will be racing down the East Coast in 10 plus knot south easterly winds.
Lock on Wood needs to cross the finish line by 7:37 pm tonight, 30 December to win on handicap but at 0600 hours this morning she was still 40 nm from the finish.
