The Black Heart Hartley 16 Nationals 2013 will feature 23 strong boats vying for the top prize in the three-day regatta battle in New Plymouth. Contenders from New Plymouth, Napier, Auckland, and Whangarei will have their first real look at their foes when measuring takes place on Wednesday with racing starting on Thursday through to Saturday in a three-race per day schedule.
The entry list boasts many past winners including current national champions Gareth and Mike Insley in Pronto from Manukau and eight time winner Thijs Calkoen from Napier. It’s also great to have Volvo race legend Ross Field teaming up with his New Plymouth based brother Colin at the event, and should be a threat.
The biggest highlight are the young sailors now getting involved in the Hartley 16 class with the ability to buy a nationally competitive boat at a very reasonable price, but there will be plenty of old hands out there keeping them honest.
