Nova Southeastern University (NSU) announced that Guy Harvey and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation are providing a very generous financial gift that will allow students, faculty and other researchers at NSU’s Oceanographic Center to enhance their work and also provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students studying marine biology.

Guy Harvey is joining a long list of other philanthropic community icons and leaders in having his name added to a building at Nova Southeastern University. Because of his generous gift, the Oceanographic Center will now be known as the NSU Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center, helping firmly establish his legacy at NSU.

For many years, NSU has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Guy Harvey, Ph.D. and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. To that end, NSU’s Oceanographic Center is home to the Guy Harvey Research Institute, where researchers have been studying and learning about our marine ecosystem and the animals that call it home.

Now, that relationship is being taken to the next level.

'This is another wonderful example of Dr. Harvey’s philanthropic, academic and environmental passion and we are thrilled that NSU’s relationship with him and his foundation will continue for many years to come,' said George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., president and CEO of Nova Southeastern University. 'I am particularly excited that his gift will help the next generation of marine biologists, researchers and oceanographers continue the important work that our Oceanographic Center is doing. I commend Dr. Harvey for his commitment not only to our environment, but to our students as well.'

'Today’s announcement is an extension of our long relationship with Nova Southeastern University,' said Steve Stock, president of Guy Harvey, Inc. and Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, based in Davie, Florida. 'This is a great win-win opportunity offering tremendous exposure to both of our brands, and our joint mission to study and manage the world’s marine fishes and their ecosystems.'

While most people recognize Guy Harvey as a marine wildlife artist and conservationist, not many are aware that he earned a Ph.D. in fisheries biology. It’s this love of the marine world and a desire to not only learn more about our ocean-bound neighbors but to provide direction and assistance in the protection and conservation of these creatures that led to the formation of the GHRI in 1999.

'I am extremely pleased to have my name associated with Nova Southeastern University’s world-class Oceanographic Center in Hollywood and to further my relationship with the university,' said Harvey. 'The cutting edge research work being conducted by the Guy Harvey Research Institute at the Oceanographic Center is something I am very proud of and hopefully the additional funds from this arrangement will help ensure the continued growth of the research and educational work ongoing at the Center.'

About NSU’s Oceanographic Center: The Oceanographic Center provides high-quality graduate education programs (i.e. master’s, doctoral, certificate) in a broad range of marine science disciplines. About NSU’s Guy Harvey Research Institute: Established in 1999, the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) is a collaboration between the renowned marine artist, scientist and explorer, Dr. Guy Harvey, and Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center. The mission of the GHRI is to provide the scientific information necessary to understand, conserve, and effectively manage the world’s marine fishes and their ecosystems. The GHRI is one of only a handful of private organizations dedicated exclusively to the science-based conservation of marine fish populations and biodiversity. The research, education and outreach activities of the GHRI are supported by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, AFTCO Inc., extramural research grants, philanthropic donations by private businesses and individuals, and NSU. About Guy Harvey: A marine wildlife artist and conservationist who earned a Ph.D. in fisheries biology, Guy Harvey’s depictions of marine life, especially sportfish such as marlin, are very popular with sport fishermen and have been reproduced in prints, posters, t-shirts, jewelry, clothing and other consumer items. Harvey is also a very vocal and active advocate for marine conservation, having established the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University as well as the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, an organization that funds marine conservation research and educational initiatives.
