The NCYC-LMYC Friendship Cup and Australian Day Race was held at NCYC on 26 January 2013. The Friendship Cup, a PHS teams event, is given to the Club (NCYC or LMYC) on a points basis with the best results from their top three yachts. The Australia Day Race is an IRC race sailed within the Friendship Cup. With a wet and fresh North Easterly breeze and thunderstorms the fleet of 14 yachts poked their heads out into Stockton Bight and proceeded up the 4 mile beat in lumpy conditions before hurtling back down wind as a series of thunderstorms passed over the course. The yachts then turned and again beat to windward before charging back into the harbour finishing as part of the Newcastle Maritime Festival. There were two relatively eventful incidents during the days’ racing. The first was Farr 40 PT73’s wipe-out at the top mark after setting their masthead asymmetric spinnaker in 24 knots of wind. Skipper Tony Lobb was heard saying at the bar post racing 'We got it up ok but unfortunately we had an override… Oh well, at least I’ll keep the sail makers busy this week!'. The second incident was Northshore designed Escapade breaking its rudder stock and losing its rudder almost at the bottom of the first run. After getting the sails down and the boat under control and with the assistance of NCYC committee boat Wombat (Steber 34) and the efforts of Newcastle’s Marine Rescue NSW Escapade was safely towed back into Newcastle Harbour to assess the damage. Taking top spot on PHS and leading LMYC’s team to victory in the Friendship Cup was Fathom owned by David Berryman. Second and third went to Storage King Wallop (Peter Hewson) and Xstatic (Peter White), respectively. The Australia Day Cup (IRC) was won by Storage King Wallop. Second and third on IRC went to PT73 (Tony Lobb) and Anger Management (Phil Arnall), respectively.
