Festival of Sails - ASBA Sports Boats – Day 1

It was a hot day in Geelong today for the first two races in the Festival of Sails for the Sports Boat fleet, in more ways than one.

Racing got away on time in 5-7 knts of breeze which stayed at this strength all day and a great fleet of 16 boats from all around the country. The contest for line honours was always going to be between Kiss (Greg Scherwinski), Vivace (Noel Leigh-Smith) and Game On (Julian Newton). After two races today the spoils have gone to Vivace in both races from Game On and then Kiss.

In the overall results under the SMS Rating System, Paul Heyes (Foam Fast) and his crew sailed two faultless races taking race one by 14 seconds ahead of Cam Rae’s Monkey Business and race two by 25 seconds in front of Game On. Game On sit in second overall after also securing a third in race one.

Third overall is the crew on Monkey Business with placings of second and fourth. Vivace is holding down fourth on equal points with South Australian entrant Troppo (Sam Gaylard) who finished the day with a fourth and fifth in his first Geelong event in his rejuvenated E780.

The racing was close all day with less than a minute separating places one to five in race one on corrected time and in both races, one second being the different between fourth and fifth.

The crews wound down after racing with a swim and the daily ASBA presentation on the dock with heaps of Gill sailing gear, Hogs Breath supporters bag and some great 3 Oceans wine.

It is expected to be a different story for Friday’s passage race with the current forecast of 15-20 knts and just a few degrees cooler.

Day one and two races the results are here : http://www.topyacht.net.au/results/2013/fos/sports/series.htm
