Singapore is getting into gear to host Act 2 of the 2013 Extreme Sailing Series™ tour starting today (Thursday 11th April). Singapore is now a fixture on the global, eight-stop tour for the next three years supported by Local Partner, Aberdeen Asset Management, the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Sailing Federation.
Eight international teams with 28 World Championship titles, 20 Olympic campaigns and 25 America’s Cups between them will line up for four days of intense stadium racing, including locals Scott Glen Sydney and Justin Wong and their home nation invitational entry, Team Aberdeen Singapore.
The eight international teams dispersed after Act 1 in Muscat while their Extreme 40s made the 6,904 km journey from Oman to Singapore. Containers packed with eight Extreme 40s in their unassembled state will arrive in Singapore on the evening of 5 April and it was all hands on deck as the sailors and technical crew worked together to build and assemble the components before a 30-tonne crane lifted the 62ft masts onto the 40ft catamarans. The assembly took place from 6-7 April at The Promontory@Marina Bay where the public were able to watch the sailors and technical experts at work.
Starting tomorrow, 12-14 April, a fun packed entertainment programme and activities will be available for families and spectators to enjoy at the free entry race village located at The Promontory@Marina Bay. Enjoy the entertaining live music from bands ‘The Common People’ and ‘Goodfellas’ while soaking in the atmosphere at the Race Village.
Sailing enthusiasts can also enjoy on water activities such as sailing on Pacers led by the instructors from SingaporeSailing. Catch the NeilPryde RS One windsurfing and Optimist sailing demonstrations right in the Marina Reservoir. Race commentary by expert Vicky Song will give spectators insight on racing tactics and the lowdown of Extreme 40s racing.
Activities for children such as face painting, bouncy castle, remote control sailing, gyro spin rides and sailing joy rides will keep the young ones entertained. Singapore’s first gourmet food truck with a social vision, Kerbside Gourmet, and food and beverage establishments such as Harry’s Bar, The Travelling C.O.W, Old Chang Kee, Mr Bean, Subway and Coffee Club will also be present to satisfy the crowd’s appetite.
Scott Glen Sydney, skipper and tactician of Team Aberdeen Singapore is excited to perform before a home crowd, 'I am really raring to go and I can't wait to get on to the water to start competing with my teammates.
