Etchells Worlds 2010 – John Bertrand has won the World Championships

Bertrand, Palfrey and Slingsby. Etchells Worlds Championships 2010 Ingrid Abery http://www.ingridabery.com
Etchells World Championship 2010 Howth Ireland. It’s the final day, with two races to be sailed to decide the 2010 title.

After a general recall, there is a clean start for race 8, its 18 knots and building.

At the top mark its 22 knots and freshening with Julia Bailey (GBR) leading John Bertrand (US), Damien King (AUS), Graeme Bailey (GBR), Jud Smith (USA), Marvin Beckmann (USA), Eamon O' Nolan (IRL), Chris Hampton (AUS), David Burrows (IRL) and Lawrence Mead (GBR).

It was a quick surfing run and at the leeward gate it was Bertrand, Mead, Hampton, Smith, King, Peter Duncan (USA), Beckmann, Dan O'Grady (IRL), Argyle Campbell (USA) and Gary Gilbert (BAH) with Ante Razmilovic (HKG), who was the major threat to a Bertrand win, with a lot of work to do back around 20th.

At the top mark the second time, the series leader John Bertrand, with his crew of Andrew Palfrey and Tom Slingsby were looking every bit championship material as they rounded ahead of Smith, Duncan, King, Tim Patton (BER), Nils Razmilovic, Julia Bailey, Hampton, Mead, Gilbert and Burrows.

Where is Ante? If he bombs in this race its all over.

A provisional bullet for Bertrand. Well at least there was a loud noise, so he was not OCS.

Across the line after him were Patton, Smith, Duncan, Mead, King, N Razmilovic, Hampton, J Bailey, and Beckmann.

Bertrand currently has a nine drop if he is still lowest points with that nine added back in at the end of this race, it’s all over.

Ante Razmilovic has finished outside the top ten placing provisionally. In fact he finishes a shattering 19th place.

John Bertrand, the America’s Cup legend, with crew Olympic Star sailor Andrew Palfrey and dual Laser World Champion Tom Slingsby are the 2010 Etchells World Champions, winning with a race to spare.

The fleet has gone into sequence for Race 9.

Slingsby will be shortly heading for the airport, he is heading for the 2010 Laser World Championships starting on Monday at Hayling Island, where he will head up the 12 man Australian team. Slingsby has been in good Laser form, with a last up win in the Skandia Sail for Gold at the 2012 Olympic venue in Weymouth but he has certainly not had the recent venue practice that his arch rival GBR's Paul Goodison has enjoyed.
