O holandês Bouwe Bekking está de volta a Volvo Ocean Race comandando o Team Brunel. Será a sétima participação do experiente velejador na regata.

A organização da Volvo Ocean Race anunciou, nesta terça-feira (3), a entrada de mais um barco na próxima edição da Volta ao Mundo. O Team Brunel, comandado pelo experiente Bouwe Bekking, será o representante da Holanda na regata, que começa em outubro de 2014 na Espanha. A equipe é a quarta confirmada para a aventura de quase 73 mil quilômetros pelos mares do mundo, e se junta a SCA (Suécia), Abu Dhabi (Emirados Árabes Unidos) e Team Dongfeng (China).

O Team Brunel patrocina um barco pela terceira vez na regata e resgata uma tradição da Holanda na Volvo Ocean Race. Do país europeu saíram atletas de alto nível para a vela oceânica e barcos de ponta, que foram campeões do evento. 'Nossa nação é conhecida em todo o mundo como o país dos moinhos de vento, dos diques, das tulipas, do queijo, dos tamancos de madeira e da Volvo Ocean Race. A regata está no nossa sangue', disse Bouwe Bekking.

O comandante do barco Team Brunel espera inspirar a nova geração da vela holandesa correndo a Volvo Ocean Race. 'Seguimos nossa história e podemos deixar um legado para os próximos velejadores que vão surgir. Participaremos da melhor regata do mundo'.

O skipper holandês, que estreou na edição 1985-86, terá a chance também de fazer história na competição. Será a sua sétima participação na regata, igualando o recorde do sueco Roger Nilson. Bouwe Bekking foi comandante duas vezes e tambem tem dois vice-campeonatos em sete participacoês.

Os holandeses têm tradição no evento desde que a regata era chamada de Whitbread Round the World Race. Em 1977-1978, o lendário Conny van Rietschoten foi comandande do Flyer. Ele triunfou novamente em 1981-82 e continua sendo o único skipper a ter vencido a Volvo Ocean Race por duas vezes.

Sobre a parceria com a Brunel, Bouwe Bekking acrescentou: 'É uma grande oportunidade para reforçar ao mundo o que a Brunel significa: diversidade, dinamismo e presença internacional. A Volvo Ocean Race é o veículo perfeito para passar essa mensagem'.

A Brunel fez sua estreia na Volta ao Mundo na edição de 1997-1998 com o BrunelSunergy. A empresa voltou a patrocinar um time na edição de 2005-06, que acabou sendo vencida por um time holandês, o ABN AMRO ONE.

Veterano de três edições da Volvo Ocean Race e presidente da Sailing Holland, Gideon Messink, está preparado para o desafio de colocar o barco na disputa pelo título. 'Nosso objetivo é competir com uma equipe profissional e vencer. O barco Volvo Ocean 65 é tecnológico e com várias novidades. Agora é com a nossa equipe. Vamos usar nossa experiência no novo time. - A última campanha de um barco holandês foi com o Delta Lloyd em 2008-09.

- O primeiro velejador holandês na regata foi Tjerk M. Romke de Vries. Ele velejou no Sayula II, vencedor da primeira edição da regata em 1973-74.
