Dedicated fleet set off for NCYC Cabbage and Bird Islands Race

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s (NCYC) small but dedicated fleet set off from the marina this evening for the Category 2 race from Newcastle north to Cabbage Tree Island then south to Bird Island before returning to Newcastle to finish. The 100 mile overnight race is used by NCYC yachts as a shake down for longer races over Christmas including the Sydney Hobart and Pittwater Coffs races.

Once the standard procedure regarding sign-in at the start with storm sails hoisted was complete the fleet got away in a eight knots NE which was expected to build to 15-20 knots later in the evening. Best out of the blocks was Corby 43 Anger Management followed by TP52 Frantic which appeared to have an issue with its headsail soon after the start resulting in a headsail change.

Other yachts in the race include well known Farr 40 Aurora and Inglis 37 She’s the Culprit which will have a good battle on the breeze to Cabbage Tree Island.

The first yacht is expected to finish just before sunrise tomorrow. Race results will be posted on the NCYC website.
