Clipper Round the World Yacht Race - 300 mile barrier record smashed

by Ruth Harrington on 22 Nov 2013
PSP Logistics as it left Cape Town, South Africa for Albany, Western Australia - Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2013/2014 Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race
In Race four of the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race the fleet is currently en route to Western Australia. In the last 24 hours competitor PSP Logistics has set a new record for the number of miles covered in a day as it continues its campaign to win the world’s longest ocean race.

Between 0000UTC on Thursday 21 November and 0000UTC Friday 22 November PSP Logistics became the first of the twelve entries competing in Clipper 2013-14 Race to break the 300 mile barrier in 24 hours, clocking up 310.5 miles while averaging a speed of 12.94 knots.

The previous record was held by De Lage Landen which stood at 295 miles in Race 4 from Cape Town, South Africa to Geraldton, Western Australia during the Clipper 2011-12 Race.

Race Director, Justin Taylor said of the new record: 'Several boats had been threatening the 300 mile barrier for some time as it requires a constant 12.5 knots of boat speed to achieve, a speed we know the yachts could maintain in the right conditions.

'PSP Logistics broke the record during the Ocean Sprint which shows that not only do the weather conditions have to come together, but also the crew’s determination to break it must be resolute. It’s not just done by chance but hard work too.'

Frank Dixie Managing Director of PSP Worldwide Logistics, said: 'We pride ourselves on our speed as a business, so it is a source of genuine delight that the boat that bears our name is living up to this reputation. We are so proud of the crew and our skipper who have worked so hard to push the boundaries of the possible and we know they are going to keep this up all the way around the planet.'

PSP Logistics, well known for its sponsorship of the PSP Southampton Boat Show, is a specialist in shipping boats around the globe. Already the Official Logistics Partner for the Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race, PSP has handled logistics for the race for the previous two events as well as being a logistics consultant to the America's Cup.

The fleet is expected to arrive in Albany, from Monday 25 November. The fleet will then race the 2150 miles to Sydney, where the teams will prepare to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race on Thursday 26 December. The fleet will then depart for Brisbane where they are expected to arrive in in from Monday 6 January.
