A new partnership launched at this week’s CIPD L&D Show at Olympia is to use the natural team-building atmosphere on board ocean racing yachts, with proven neuroscience, to create engaging L&D programmes based on research conducted on the unique Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Clipper Events has teamed up with Mission Performance to transfer insights and performance lessons from the hostile environments encountered on the world’s longest ocean adventure into inspiring development programmes and experiences for business.

Speaking about the new partnership, Clipper Events Manager, Emma Eason said: “We have seen the power and transformational nature of participation in ocean racing over the years on the biennial Clipper Race, which has trained over 4000 novices and non-professional sailors. We have captured some of that in day-sailing opportunities and Mission Performance has studied how to translate the lessons from the hostile ocean environment to challenging business situations for organisations and individuals.”

Mission Performance has been transferring the lessons from challenging environments to business for the past twelve years, and operates globally with a group of elite mountaineers, decorated soldiers, ocean racers, ocean rowers, pilots, polar explorers, actors and elite sportsmen and women. The client list now includes the Clipper Race crew, who have battled against Mother Nature across 40,000 miles of the world’s oceans.

Mission Performance Managing Director, Rob Lewis says: “One of the reasons why we got involved in the Clipper Race and now Clipper Events is that we share a similar philosophy about people and we think that people have within they have the great resources to own their own development and change and make different decisions. Provided they’ve got the right environment they feel supported and can make those changes.

“You’re doing something that is bigger than yourself and that team spirit is sadly a little bit of a rare commodity in some of the businesses we deal with. We can transform the way people see themselves and others and make different decisions and get different results.

“We want to share as many lessons that it presents with businesses through the partnership with Clipper Race and Clipper Events and the new L&D programmes on offer.”

The programmes explore four main themes:
Leadership Communications - inspiring and engaging your audience to perform
Coaching - developing the world class behaviours of performance
High Performance Team Development - building teams that deliver together
Leadership - building and scaling capability to deliver

Founded by legendary yachtsman and Clipper Ventures Chairman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in 1995, Clipper Events is no stranger to teamwork. It stands apart from other sailing event providers by using its unique fleet of identical 68-foot and 70-foot ocean racers for iconic sailing events and hospitality and development experiences which also meet the business and relationship development objectives of UK and global companies.

Clipper Events and Mission Performance will be launching its programmes at its debut of the CIPD L&D Show, stand 210 from Wednesday 11 to Thursday 12 May, Olympia London. With a strong conference programme and over 110 suppliers exhibiting, The CIPD Learning and Development Show offers sessions and opportunities covering a wide range of topics. During the show, former Clipper Race and Clipper Events skippers, Brendan Hall and Vicky Ellis will share their insights into establishing a cohesive and successful team through lessons learnt on the water.
