Cats prepare for Aruba Heineken Regatta

Racing starts Sunday at the Aruba Heineken Regatta, organized by Edwin Lodder, in co-operation with the Aruba Tourism Authority and Heineken-Aruba. Thanks to the help of a lot of sponsors, it's possible to organize this event to include a combination of sailing, relaxation and parties.

This year is the 16th running of the regatta, in recent years the event has grown to approximately 50 boats and is now the biggest Catamaran event in the Caribbean. Participants come from a variety of European countries and locally from Aruba. Racing starts Sunday 12 November and finishes 17 November.

Steve Arkley has been getting into the relaxed atmosphere and sent these shots after the catamarans were unloaded and prepared for the racing.

The Island

Aruba is an unspoiled pearl in the Caribbean. Situated just 17 miles north of Venezuela, it is not widely known to European tourists but is a popular holiday destination for Americans.

The warm climate and constant trade winds make Aruba a haven for catamaran sailors, which is why they keep coming back year after year to compete in the Heineken Aruba Catamaran Regatta.

The regatta venue is approximately 4 miles north west of Oranjestad, on Palm Beach and is in an ideal location for good sailing with offshore winds providing flat water and a large bay to race in.
