Wild Oats XI, skippered by Mark Richards, and owned by Robert Oatley, has taken Line Honours in the 2012 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race.
The Wild Oats XI team arrived at Keppel Bay at 9.18pm on Saturday night, completing this year's race in 33 hours, 18 minutes and 26 seconds – nine hours over last year’s race record time of 24 hours, 22 minutes, and 20 seconds.
Coming second in Division 1 was Black Jack, skippered by Mark Bradford, and owned by Peter Harburg, finishing at 6.13am Sunday 5 August, nine hours after Wild Oats XI.
Jessandra II, owned and skippered by Roland Dane, came in first in the Division 2 category with a time of 64 hours, 45 minutes and 33 seconds.
Kerumba, owned and skippered by Tam Farragher came in fourth behind A5 Audi Centre Sunshine Coast – a great effort considering this was Kerumba’s first-ever race.
The beautiful, sunny Queensland winter weather was idyllic, if you weren’t planning on going anywhere fast. Unfortunately, the light winds made it difficult for some of the yachts, and forced Ocean Affinity, Carbon Credits, Lunchtime Legend and Ragtime to retire from the race due to time constraints. Trumpcard suffered electrical faults and made the hard decision to return to Manly Harbour. Only eleven of the original 27-strong fleet officially finished the race.
Overall, because of the fickle breeze, it was a slower race than that of previous years with some of the 50-footers just finishing around midnight on Sunday.
The Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Yacht Race, a significant yearly event on the calendar of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, is part of Tourism Queensland’s Season of Sailing and the result of collaboration between the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron and Keppel Bay Marina. To celebrate the race, Keppel Bay Marina hosted a cocktail party on Saturday night, and a finish-line festival and presentation awards, featuring Jessica Watson, on Sunday.
Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all entrants, volunteers and our valued sponsors. We look forward to even more boats entering this wonderful race next year and hopefully a bit more breeze to beef up the competition.
