Barco Dongfeng quase bate numa baleia em travessia do Atlântico

Os chineses do Dongfeng estão, literalmente, enfrentando condições difícieis na travessia entre os Estados Unidos e a Europa. A última da equipe de Charles Caudrelier no Atlântico Norte foi uma quase colisão com uma baleira enorme que acompanhou por um bom tempo a velejada. Tudo isso somado à falta de visibilidade e ventos de até 40 nós. 'Nós tivemos a experiência mais assustadora até agora quando chegamos perto de bater numa baleia. Estava tão perto que pudemos ouvir sua respiração. Eu só segurei minha respiração e torci para escapar do perigo', disse Charles Caudrelier, comandante do barco chinês.

A tripulação conta com quatro atletas chineses, que estão em treinamento e nunca atravessaram um oceano antes. A viagem termina Lorient e tem 2.800 milhas náuticas. O Dongfeng deve chegar na região da Bretanha na próxima terça-feira (10).

Enquanto isso, a tripulação só de mulheres da Volvo Ocean Race, a SCA chegou com segurança à sua base de treinamento em Lanzarote, nas Ilhas Canárias, em 29 de maio após fazer praticamente a mesma travessia do Dongfeng, ou seja, partindo de Newport, Rhode Island. As meninas fizeram o percurso de ida e volta pelo Atlântico. Foram 7.200 milhas náuticas e 30 dias no mar.


Outro barco que tem Newport no radar é o Team Alvimedica. O veleiro de bandeiras turca e norte-americana partiu de Lisboa, em Portugal, no dia 30 de maio, fazendo o caminho inverso do Dongfeng. A bordo do Alvmedica está o neozelandês Stu Bannatyne, que dá suporte e experiência ao time mais novo da Volvo Ocean Race (todos devem ter menos de 30 anos no barco). 'Nós estamos fazendo manobras a todo instante a 25 nós de vento', relatou Amory Ross, que está no time.

Os holandeses do Team Brunel, liderados por Bouwe Bekking, navegaram para casa de Lanzarote, na Espanha, para a Holanda no início de maio. A equipe completou as 2.000 milhas náuticas de qualificação, exigidas pela Volvo Ocean Race. O barco foi batizado no domingo (31) no porto de Amsterdã. Acesse o site deles.

Já o Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing tem incentivado seu time a treinar forte na academia. Os velejadores liderados por Ian Walker treinam duas vezes ao dia em Cascais, em Portugal. Na água, algumas velejadas para acertar detalhes.
