Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s team beat the team from New York Yacht Club 2-0 in the finals to win the inaugural Balboa Yacht Club Team Race Invitational. Although New York beat Newport Harbor in their prior match during the round robin, Newport Harbor decisively won the best of three final. In the second race, Newport’s team finished first, second, and third to clinch the regatta. The three teams from NHYC included racers with a lot of experience in the Gov Cup boats used as well as the local conditions.

In the consolation round, San Diego YC bested host club BYC to finish third and fourth, respectively. The other teams involved included teams from California Yacht Club which placed fifth and Annapolis Yacht Club, sixth.

Sunday’s weather was sunny with four to six knots of breeze from the southwest, slightly more than Saturday. Temperatures were in the 60’s for the event. An enthusiastic spectator fleet enjoyed the racing which was held in the ocean off the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California.

The boats used in the regatta are the Governor’s Cup 21’s which were designed and built for the BYC Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Challenge. They will be used again in the 48th Gov Cup to be held from July 14-19, 2014.
