Annapolis to Newport Race - Rambler takes the inside of Block Island

In the Annapolis to Newport Race, Rambler has chosen to go inside (west) of Block Island. The option to go east or west of the island is normally dictated by the tide. Unless you go west of the island at just the right time you face a really strong foul current. Rambler’s speed has been climbing rapidly over the last couple of hours as the afternoon sou’wester builds. The decision for Rambler may be as much about sailing angles as tide. Rambler and Decision have been trading corrected time first in class all the way up the coast. At the last update Rambler took over the lead. With Decision still 130 nm from the finish it will be a while before the class winner is decided. Temptation – Oakcliff retired at 0400 this morning to put a crew member with a family emergency ashore. They will continue on to Newport to sail in New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta this weekend.
