Aberdeen Asset Management Inter-School Sailing Festival is being held from 15 and 16 March 2014. With new title Sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management, this year’s festival features a packed entry list, with 12 teams in Division A and 11 in Division B. With each team requiring a minimum of six sailors to sail three boats, there will be in excess of 158 school sailors descending on Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Middle Island sailing centre for this annual event.
Alex Boggis, Managing Director, Hong Kong, Aberdeen Asset Management is enthusiastic about the event and said: 'Sailing is an exciting sport that Aberdeen strongly identifies with. Teamwork and the ability to manage the unexpected are key qualities that we admire. We also believe in supporting youth development, which ties in with our investment philosophy of identifying potential and having the patience to allow that potential to really blossom. We hope everyone has a great time at the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Inter-School Sailing Festival.'
Over the course of the two days, the competition will use a team racing format over 120 short races to identify the winning teams in each Division, with the action taking place in the waters right in front of the Deep Water Bay to Repulse Bay promenade.
It is critical for teams to work together as a tactical unit to prevent their opposition from scoring a lower total for their three boats, with points being awarded to each boat equal to their finishing place.
The 12 teams in division A will be divided into two for round-robin qualifiers, after which the top three teams from each pool progress to the finals round-robin. The 11 teams in division B will sail a straight round-robin. In this format, each race will be as important as the last and while teams will be ranked on the number of race wins, the close competition will probably mean that the final results will also be decided on the positions scored in each race.
The Race Committee will be kept on their toes ensuring that the event makes the most of the conditions to squeeze in the required number of races and if not the competition may be adjusted to ensure that come 1600hrs on Sunday the winners can be decided.
