160 Optimists compete in North Islands at Taupo

by NZIODA on 30 Nov 2012
Nick Egnot-Johnson took the lead and the new YNZ Bib #1 on day one at the Opti North Islands at Taupo at the weekend and didn’t look back! NZ Optimist Team

The Optimist North Islands were recently hosted by Lake Taupo Yacht Club, Nov 16-18, and were held in very challenging conditions including a wide range of wind strengths and cold temperatures throughout.

The open fleet had 160 sailors from across 14 NZ Clubs and 5 Australian Clubs. Nick Egnot- Johnson from Murrays Bay Sailing Club sailed consistently in the 12 race event finishing 6 points ahead of his club mate Leonard Takahshi-Fry in second place. Alec Brodie (Middle Harbour/RPAYC Australia) sailed solidly into third. Karensa Jennings also from Murrays Bay Sailing Club was the first girl, finishing 10th overall.

Green fleet presented 44 sailors over 11 clubs with 2 from Australia. Conditions challenged Green Fleet sailors limiting their series to 5 races. Torbay Sailing Club sailor Reece Caufield finished first (points count back) followed closely by David Robinson and Campbell Stanton.

Thank you Taupo Yacht Club and all those that volunteered to help run this great event.
