One fisherman is dead and another has been treated for hypothermia after their small boat capsized and sank off Omana Beach in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf early on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Peter Raynes of Counties Manukau said police were told around 1.15am that a small boat had capsized and sunk approximately 200 metres off Omana Beach.

The two men on board attempted to swim to shore and one of them made it and raised the alarm.

Police, Coastguard personnel and the Westpac Helicopter mounted a search and at about 5am the body of the second man was found about 50 metres from the submerged boat.

The fishermen were not wearing lifejackets.

Man dead after catamaran accident

Another man is also dead after a catamaran wrecked near Taranga Island off the coast of Whangarei on Saturday morning.

The Rescue Coordination Centre said it received a beacon signal at 7.13am. The beacon was activated by the dead man's son after the boat was wrecked.

The centre sent a rescue helicopter which found the wrecked boat and later the dead man and his son.

Police said it appeared the man drowned after knocking his head on the rocks.

Both the dead man and his son were taken to Whangarei by the rescue helicopter.
