Matchrace Thailand Championship - On the 14 – 16 March, 11 Matchrace teams will be prepared for battle at the Kingdom Property Matchrace Thailand Championships hosted by the Royal Varuna Yacht Club. As the biggest Matchrace event in Thailand the popularity of this contest is impressive attracting some of the best teams from Europe and Asia.

We are privileged to have Bjorn Hansen (SWE) leading the line of skippers ranked third in the world with Mati Sepp, from Estonia ranked 21st. The event is a showcase of Matchracing in Asia with skippers including Maxi Soh (SIN 50th), Jeremy Koo (MAS 73rd), Gunwoo Park (KOR 107th), Morten Jakobson (THA 137th) and Ayaz Shaikh (IND 192nd), each representing their country as the highest ranked Matchracer.

The boats used for the grade three championships are Platu 25's with a strict crew weight limit of 350kgs. It often allows five crew members per boat for Asian teams and all female teams can have up to six members. This year we have the all-female team of Denise Lim (SIN 173rd open, 20th female). Justin Liu (SIN 243rd) is completing the Singapore contingent. The founder of 'Matchrace Thailand' Jon Erikson (FIN 237th) will be attending and local sailor Don Whitcraft (THA) switching from the 49er to compete.

The event is not just sailing, uniquely as stated in the notice of race is that all Matchracers must attend the Saturday evening beach party. Not much of a push when the Royal Varuna Yacht Club are providing music, BBQ and drinks overlooking the very beautiful Gulf of Thailand.

With a truly great line up we hope the 2014 Matchrace Thailand Championships will be unforgettable for all, watch this space!
