Saturday 13 April sees the opening race in this year’s RYA North East Youth Travellers Series, sponsored by Trident UK.

'We are expecting a good fleet of about 20 youngsters,' said Judith Corry, the RYA North East Youth Travellers Series co-ordinator. 'We have Youth Travellers events planned across the region throughout the spring and early summer, with the final event and prize-giving at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club on 20 July. Our event at South Shields Sailing Club on Saturday 18 May coincides with the RYA 'Push the Boat Out' weekend when sailing clubs throughout the North East will be holding open days and we are expecting hundreds of boats out on the water across the Region.'

The RYA NE Youth Travellers Series is a great training ground for future champions and last year’s North East Youth Travellers Series winner, 14 year old Simon Weatherspoon from Prudhoe, will fighting to retain his crown in 2013.

'I don’t think I will be able to sail at all the Travellers events this year because I am hoping to compete in more Laser qualifying events across the country. I was 3rd Junior at the RYA Youth National Championships last week and I am really hoping to qualify as part of a Great Britain team that will be going to the Laser Radial Youth European Championships, which are being held in Split, Croatia at the end of June.'

We wish Simon and all our North East young sailors the best of luck for the 2013 season. RYA Push the Boat Out (PTBO) will be taking place over the weekend of 18-19 May and RYA Clubs and Training Centres across the country are opening their doors to their local community, inviting everyone to ‘have a go’ at sailing and windsurfing.

You can find out about your nearest RYA Clubs and Centres and their PTBO events including open days and taster sessions here. From regular sailors to newcomers or for a family day out, there are plenty of ways to Push the Boat Out and get RYA website
