Port of Plymouth Regatta entries now open

Entries are now open for the 2011 Port of Plymouth Regatta which will run from 30 July to 7 August.

With main sponsorship once again by the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners the annual event run by the Port of Plymouth Sailing Association is the premier sailing regatta in the area.

The race schedule for 2011 will see a top class 8 race series for yachts over the weekend 30-31 July and a similar series for dinghies over the weekend 6-7 August. Separately to these series, two evening yacht races will be held on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 August, and three evening dinghy races will be held on Wednesday 3 August, Thursday 4 August, and Friday 5 August.

Following the success of the event last year, the Rookie Series for young people who have done some sailing but would like to get into racing is once again in the schedule, running from Thursday 4 August through to Sunday 7 August inclusive.

Young sailors who do not have their own dinghy will be able to hire one for the event, and will also be able to get expert coaching and tuition from the local RYA Onboard team. This event is of particular significance as the Regatta will be supporting and raising funds for Plymouth Youth Sailing.

The other event making a return due to popular demand in 2011 is the White Sail Series which, as last year, will consist of a single race each day over the weekend of 30-31 July. This is more genteel event, designed to generate a spirit of competition but without being hectic! The focus isn’t on results, and no spinnakers are allowed.

A great shore side program has also been planned to support the activity afloat, with daily prize giving, draws, and live music. Free yacht and dinghy berthing is available for visitors, subject to availability, and entry fees have been pegged at 2009 prices.

Other sponsors include Mayflower Marina, Westways, Plymouth Yacht Haven, Mountbatten Water sports and Activities Center, Sutton Harbor Marina and Ullman Sails.
