One Design Update 2013 – North Sails Australia + Video
by North Sails on 10 May 2013
Otto Henry U11 NSW State Champion Rupert Henry
Optimist State Championships - even though the winter months are here, there has been plenty happening in one design racing around the country.
Some top performances have been achieved in the recent Optimist state championships held over the last couple of months and some special mentions must be highlighted. They include young Ashleigh Coles who has been training hard over the past 12 months taking out first girl in the open fleet at both the VIC and NSW state championships. She also placed second girl at the QLD state championships on the weekend behind the current national champion Annabel Davies from WA.
Otto Henry from NSW who has only just turned 11 has had some amazing performances winning his age group at the NSW and QLD state championships. He will also be competing this year at the European championships in Hungry.
Max Paul took out the open fleet NSW title and and Max Quirk won the QLD title last weekend.
All these sailors as well as 16 others were competing in NZ at their National Championships where Australia achieved it best team result ever.
The Australian Optimist Worlds Team have been training hard and gearing up for the World Championships July this year in Lake Garda Italy.
The team is made up of the top five optimist sailors from the National Championship and include Annabel Davies, Max Quirk, Tom Cunich, James Grogan and Blake Selley.
Dave O’Connor from North Sails is coaching the team and has been very impressed with the skill level and determination shown by the team.
They will also be doing some training with the NZ team and will be teaming up with them at the worlds. There will be plenty of updates available on how the team is progressing leading up to and throughout the regatta.
Check out this video from our recent training camp in TAS:
The Mcconaghy 38’s have their Autumn championships this weekend at Pittwater with 5 boats racing hard for the title including current national champion John Bacon and his team on Dark Star and Leslie Green’s new boat Ginger.
They are sure to put on another spectacular display of close one design racing and the team from North Sails will be servicing and sailing with a number of different clients for the regatta.
The entry list for the Etchells Australasian Winter Championships at Mooloolaba continues to grow and the top Etchells sailors from around the country will all be competing at this years event. One of the teams to watch out for this year will be Mathew Chew’s Gen X Y and he continues his very successful campaign. Richie Allanson and Michael Coxon from North Sails Australia will be up the regatta servicing and racing in the fleet.
