No racing again in 2009 Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds

by Richard Gladwell on 16 Jul 2009
Sam Meech enjoys a 25pts lead after just four races in the Boys Laser Radial event at the Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds David Kneale/Volvo Ocean Race http://www.volvooceanrace.com/

After coming back from a rest day when there was a beautiful sailing breeze, there was no racing on what should have been the third day of racing in the prestigious event.

After rain cleared the winds were still too light for racing at Buzios, Brazil.

Race officials are now faced with having seven races to sail in just two days, with a likely shortened final day to accommodate the prizegiving and medal presentations.

In the Boys 420 class, the New Zealand crew were disqualified after the International Jury found they had not kept clear of the Brazilian boat under Rule 11 (On same tack, overlapped), meaning they were a windward boat that did not keep clear of the Brazillians to leeward.

The loss of another race dace works very much in the favour of Sam Meech (NZL) who lead the Boys Laser Radial class with a massive 25 pt margin after just four races.

Day 2 of racing was also lost due to very strong winds at the South American venue.
