Paralympics London 2012 - Disappointment for Irish sailors

by ISA on 7 Sep 2012
Sonar racing at the 2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition David Staley - IFDS
The last day of racing for the Sonar class at the London 2012 Paralympic Sailing Competition had to be cancelled due to the lack of wind, an issue that had plagued the regatta for most of the week. The Irish sailors, John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello finished 11th overall.

They had been hoping to leave the regatta on a high today, repeating their second place performance from earlier in the week but unfortunately it was not to be. Although they will not come home with a medal this year, John has made the history books by competing in what was his 10th Paralympics, a record for any Irish person competing at either the Olympics or Paralympics. This was a Paralympic debut for both Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costello.

John Twomey commented 'We’re disappointed we didn’t get to race today but it’s been a great regatta and a wonderful ISA website
