Marmaris International Race Week – Final battles + Video

by Michalis Pateniotis on 3 Nov 2012
Marmaris International Race Week Day 5 Icarus Sailing Media http://www.icarussailingmedia.com/
On the Marmaris International Race Week fifth and final day participating athletes were faced with mostly light winds as they prepared for the final battles that would decide the overall winners in most of the eight categories. During these five days of inshore and coastal races we have witnessed great sailing moments and racing action in this gorgeous spot on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.

From the start, today’s races were the most suspenseful so far in this championship. The finish of the IRC 1 and 2 race was nail-biting, with ‘Dirty Diana’ and ‘Lady in Red’, fighting neck and neck until the very end, when ‘Dirty Diana’ prevailed. The rounding mark on the bay’s west side offered some stunning views of the spellbinding landscape characterizing this region. More so today, with the storm gathering on the mountains, refracting the surrounding sunlight.

In the IRC Charter 1 and 2, there were still many favorites such as Laloba, Boni Staff Pineapple, Night and Day and Mauritius. They each needed their best performance today, and some really good tactics, too. In the penultimate race of the day, for IRC fleets 3 and 4, Eker Yayik Iran and Turuncu had some unfinished business from yesterday, and were once again involved in some seriously tough battles at the pinn end. In the IRC Charter 3 and 4, Attila 2 enjoyed another great start, but Yuksel d2 was hard on its heels.

Shifts in the weather caused many upsets and further changes in the leaderboard on this final day of the event. Congratulations must be given to the winners and to all the teams taking part in the Marmaris International Race Week, as well as to the very able organizers. A beautiful awards ceremony was a fitting conclusion to such a successful event.
