Maintenance,Painting and Varnishing,non-slip areas

From Nicola, Sydney: Forget using that hard ‘grit’ to make painted or varnished surfaces into non-slip areas – Mask the area well, paint on the varnish or paint liberally, then immediately sprinkle it liberally and as evenly as possible with SUGAR. Once the paint dries, a little water melts the sugar and you end up with a non-slip surface which is very comfortable for bare feet.
