Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club's Tipsy Icicle Series week 6

The Tipsy Icicle Series, the premier winter series in the North West, continued at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 20 February 2011 with week 6 of the series.

The series has so far attracted in excess of 120 boats in the three three fleets of Asymmetric, Handicap and Laser. Sunday’s forecast was poor with an ESE forecast and temperatures just above freezing. The combination of the wind direction and the temperature made for a very cold day for the two races.

11 asymmetrics made it out on the day and were given a lesson in both races by Hamish Gledhill and Simon Dowse in the RS400. Iain and Sarah Yardley in the Laser 2000 and Jez Entwistle in the RS100 popped up in second and third spots. Eleven Lasers were out for the day and the podium was dominated by Greg Marshall, Dave Shiel and Paul Heath. Heath came in third twice and Shiel and Marshall shared the first and second places.

It was not the day for general recalls but the over ambitious Laser fleet showed the PRO little respect in the second race and eventually got away under the black flag after three attempts.

The Handicap fleet was dominated by Andy Flitcroft in the first race in his RS300 with brothers Paul and Mike Allen following up in their 300s. Race 2 was won convincingly by the guest Fireball of Chris Owen and Steve Jobson with brothers Paul and Mike Allen following up again in second and third in their 300s. A special mention for Haydn Griffiths who won the start in both races in his Optimist.

There’s still two weeks to go in all three fleets and all to sail for in all three fleets. Very well done to the PRO and her team (including the Safety teams) on a very very cold day to be out on the Flash.
