Laser European and Laser Radial Men’s World Championships day 5

Matthew Wearn on day five of the Laser European Championships 2013 Michael Blackburn
At the 2013 Laser European Championship and Laser Radial Men's World Championship in Dublin, Ireland, light and shifty conditions have led to plenty of movement on the leader boards on day five. After a couple of days of strong breeze and big waves the light conditions on Thursday caught some sailors out with plenty of high scores throughout the fleets.

In the Laser fleet Ashley Brunning moved his way up from his overnight 10th to be eighth overall heading into the final two races.

Brunning had a 29th and a fifth on Thursday and with two races remaining is in a position to work his way further up the leader board.

Matthew Wearn remains in 12th position following a 15th and a 12th with the West Australian just seven points outside the top 10.

Despite having a tough day on the water Ryan Palk has moved one place up the ladder to be 16th overall after a 30th and a 34th.

'Today wasn’t my best day I’m afraid,' said Palk. 'It was a bit of a lottery out there and I couldn’t pick a winner. I had good starts and speed but never seemed to be able to pick the right way up the course and would find myself drifting to the back of the fleet.

'It was certainly a long day and a poor one results wise but that’s sailing sometimes! The race I didn’t finish earlier in the week isn’t doing me any favours in the scoring department either, but we have two races left tomorrow morning so hopefully I can salvage some good racing to round out the regatta,' he said.

Jared West is currently in 22nd position with the Queenslander finishing with an 18th and an eighth on Thursday.

In the Laser Radial Men’s World Championship Tristan Brown continued his winning ways, claiming victory in the day’s only race to extend his lead to 18 points.

With just two races remaining Brown is closing in on his second straight Laser Radial Men’s World Championship title.

Fellow Australian Bradley Utting is currently 38th with Nicholas Howe 33rd in the silver fleet.
