Lack of breeze leads to no racing for Australian sailors in Europe

A lack of wind has led to the cancellation of day three of racing at the IFDS World Championships in Ireland and the Finn Gold Cup in Estonia.

Crews at both events spent the day waiting for the breeze to arrive before racing was eventually cancelled without a boat leaving the shore.

After four races at the Finn Gold Cup Oliver Tweddell is the top placed Australian in ninth position.

'Unfortunately we were unable to get any racing in today due to the inconsistency of the wind strength and direction,' said Tweddell. 'So it was a day to sit around and wait for the Race Officer to call it off.'

'We’ll now be aiming for three races tomorrow, which given the tricky conditions so far is going to make it a tough day of racing,' he said.

Brendan Casey is currently sitting in 35th position, with Jake Lilley 48th and Joe McMillan 69th.

At the IFDS World Championships in Kinsale, Ireland, Australia’s Sonar crew of Colin Harrison, Jonathan Harris and Russell Boaden are in second position after the opening three races.

'The third day of racing started with another postponement due to a lack of wind and after several hours of waiting around it was eventually called off for the day,' said Harrison. 'A great day for some sightseeing and to echo the locals, the conditions are never like this here!'

Matt Bugg is the leading Australian in the 2.4mR class, currently third overall after two races. Neil Patterson is 25th and Mark Durnan is 40th.
