Sail-World's NZ Editor, Richard Gladwell, crewed in the Mahurangi Regatta, sailed on Saturday January 26. The event is the highpoint of the Classic Yacht season, and has grown steadily in size each year since its inception.

Sailed in picturesque Mahurangi Harbour, about 25 miles north of Auckland, the event is now raced in various divisions from true classics to modern classics and some of the older dinghy classes including the Mistrals and Frostbites.

The course is a simple around Saddle Island at the entrance to the harbour, and back to a rounding mark close to the start boat - the restored scow, Jane Gifford. Twice around.

The first observed Mahurangi Regatta was in 1858, with the first recorded regatta being held in 1865.

The Jane Gifford, now restored and used as a start finish boat, was one of a number of scows who travelled up the Mahurangi River to Warkworth to bring the crowds down to Sullivans Bay at the entrance to the Mahurangi Harbour, to see the festivities and racing.

The following images were taken while racing, and in the wind-down afterwards.
