Have a whale of a time this winter at the Australian National Maritime

Children will have a whale of a time at the Australian National Maritime Museum this winter in a range of activities for all ages inspired by our two major international whale exhibitions – Amazing whales – Evolution and survival and Beautiful whale – life-sized photography by Bryant Austin. Have fun making whale-inspired craft, go on an after-dark torchlight tour, take part in cool claymation and photography workshops or enjoy a hilarious circus show. With a special tour for the under fives’s on offer too there’s something for children of all ages.


Craft Activities – Imagine me a whale!

5 – 12 years.

Sunday 29 June – Sunday 13 July … 10 am –4 pm.

Be inspired by majestic, mysterious and marvelous whales! Create a mobile, weave a story, print your own fabric souvenirs, craft collaborative installations and sculptures. Learn about undersea life through interactive games and having fun dressing up in costume.

Family Circus Show – Joe and the whale



Suitable for all ages.

What happens when Jo gets swallowed by William the Whale? A belly-full of adventure! Acrobatics, hula hoops, juggling sticks and circus tricks might just tickle William Whale enough to make him ah-ah-ah-choo-sneeze! Join us for a whale of a tale circus comedy these holidays.

Claymation Workshop - Claymation cetaceans

8 - 14 years.

Thursday 3 or Wednesday 9 July … 10 am – 3 pm.

Discover how to produce your own stop-motion and clay animations inspired by the Beautiful Whale and Amazing Whales exhibitions. Create your own animation to take home and have your work featured on the museum’s YouTube channel.

Family Torchlight Tour – Art in the dark

4 – 12 years and adults.

Saturday 12 July … 6 pm - 7.30 pm.

Join our special character guide, Wanda the Whale Rider, for an after-dark guided tour by torchlight through the Amazing whales and Beautiful Whale exhibitions. Create your own neon whale art to take home, have your face painted with glow-in-the-dark face paints then tuck into sea creature themed refreshments.

Adult $17, child $20.

Photography Workshop - Cockatoo Island adventures

Ages 8 – 14.

Tuesday 8 July … 10am – 3pm.



Ferry out to the spectacular shipyards of Cockatoo Island for an adventurous photography workshop. Build skills in using digital SLR cameras and learn photo editing techniques.

This course is held in partnership with Spitting Image Photography and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and is suitable for all levels of experience. All photography equipment provided.
