Delta Lloyd Regatta - Chillin' in Medemblik on day 3

by Canadian Sailing Team on 25 May 2013

On day three of the Delta Lloyd Regatta, Medemblik served up a fine winter’s day of racing. Greeted to six degree temperatures that reached a balmy eight degrees including a cocktail of hail and rain. The breeze ranged from eight to fifteen over the course of the day with significant oscillations.

For the Radial team, a minor postponement allowed the Laser and Finn sailors to enjoy the worst of the weather and more variable conditions. The delay created a long day yet solid in many respects for the Radial team. A steady left trend in the breeze and pressure coming off the land made races 2 and 3 on the day somewhat of a drag race although opportunities did exist to make your moves.

In the first race for the Radials Brenda Bowskill lead the way rounding the top mark second after executing a flawless start and first leg. Brenda battled gamely with the regatta leaders over the course of the race and finished a solid sixth, 'one of her best executed races on the international stage' suggests coach Ken Dool. Ingrid Merry put together a solid day as well, after stumbling somewhat in the days first race she consistently battled in the top 10 over the course of race 2 and 3 building her confidence in the days conditions. Claire Merry also had her moments but unfortunately a pair of yellow flags put a damper on her day.

David Wright put up a good set of results with a 10, 2, 10 to spring up to 12th overall. With only the top six moving on to medal race day, there is still work to do tomorrow.

On the Finn course, PJ Postma (NED) continues to dominate the leaderboard while Canada's Greg Douglas slips back one spot to sixth with a 3,10,7 and remains in medal race contention. Martin Robitaille hangs in at ninth place despite a black flag on his last race. Coach Chris Cook expands on their progress here in Medemblik, 'so far the areas we have been addressing are showing on the course. We are all looking forward to showing the world the full strength of this team at the worlds in August. Until then, patience and perseverance from the Finn team continues.'

The battle continues tomorrow in the finals series with more solid wind forecast and continuing cool Delta Lloyd Canadian Sailing Team website
