Sail-World.com : Over 300 yachts embargoed - 'Has Mexico lost its marbles?'
Over 300 yachts embargoed - 'Has Mexico lost its marbles?'

'Sailing in Mexico used to be a dream holiday - but not any more...'    .

Looks like it's time to delay that cruising voyage to Mexico you were planning. As one cruiser of the alleged over-300 yachts which are embargoed in Mexico expressed it in a letter to Sail-World, 'Has Mexico lost its marbles?'

The word started to leak out during the last month, being met almost with disbelief by those not involved. 'They EMBARGOED your boat? What did you do - swear at the Customs Officer?'

Then the Mexicans made the mistake of embargoing the boat of Richard Spindler, Publisher and Executive Editor of well known yachting magazine Latitude 38, simply because the newly appointed 'auditors' of the Documentation required to be carried by visiting boats called at the boat when the crew was absent and embargoed it on the spot. Other boats have been embargoed for a variety of seemingly spurious reasons - misspellings on parts of the documentation etc.

The embargoed boats cannot leave Mexico, upsetting the plans of hundreds of families, and deterring others from entering the once-popular cruising grounds.

As Richard points out, very publicly, in Latitude 38: 'To say boat owners are pissed off would be an understatement. Both Canadians and Americans are already starting to call their government representatives to protest.

'If you think marina owners, Mexico Tourism, and other business interests, such as those involved with real estate, like this, you couldn't be more wrong.

'After all, it perpetuates the image of Mexico being a scary place, where tourists and retirees can't feel safe or believe their assets are secure. We hope this matter is resolved very quickly, as we don't think it accurately reflects on Mexico or even the Mexican government as a whole. But the damage will build with each passing day.'

Watch this space...
