Canadian Albacore Association- Regatta Update

Three Albacore regattas were held in June and into the first weekend in July. The RCYC Open was held on June 11-12, the Nepean One Design on June 25-26, and the Outer Harbour Centreboard Club Open on July 2.

RCYC Open

33 boats attended the first Canadian regatta of the season. Many teams are gearing up for the Internationals in September, so attendance was up over 40% from last year.

Racing took place south of Toronto Island. Conditions on the Saturday were challenging with chop and winds varying from 2-8 knots from the east. With 7 races scheduled and no drops people had to be more conservative that usual on the start line. 4 windward-leeward races were run that day. Competition at the top was very close and after the first day Allan Measor and Richard Piercy (2009 Ontario Champions) were in first with Barney Harris and David Byron (Current International Champions) trailing by 1 point.

Winds were 8-15 knots from the WNW for the racing on the Sunday. 3 windward-leeward races were run. Competition at the top was again very close with Allan Measor and Richard Piercy leading Barney Harris and David Byron by one point going into the seventh and final race. Barney Harris and David Byron were able to get the upper hand in that race and won the regatta with 25 points. Allan Measor and Richard Piercy placed second with 29 points. George Carter (2008 Canadian Champion) and Almir Tavares placed third with 45 points.

Nepean One Design

Two weeks after RCYC, the Nepean One Design regatta was held in Ottawa. 19 boats attended, which was the largest fleet at the regatta. Many of the local juniors raced and made up a good portion of the fleet.

The Saturday was overcast with some occasional drizzle. The first race was run in 6-9 knots of wind. The second race of the day was cancelled when the wind unexpectedly died. It then filled in again with planing conditions for the next race and moderate winds for the last race of the day. The Sunday was cloudy with sunny periods and 4 races were run in winds of 7 to 14 knots.

Warner Monteiro and Sonja MacAuley (2010 Ontario Champions) won the regatta with 3 bullets and 9.25 points. Pasquale Leone and his daughter Cristina Leone placed second with 1 bullet and 19.75 points. Katrina Davis and Mike Weber were third with 26 points.

Outer Harbour Centreboard Club Regatta

The OHCC regatta was held on Saturday July 2nd. Even though it was the Canada Day long weekend and many people were away, 30 boats raced. A total of 4 races were run in light to moderate winds from the east, which allowed one drop.

Darren Monster and Joel Yatscoff won the regatta with 2 bullets and 4 points. George Carter and Almir Tavares placed second with 7 points. One point behind them was Ken Clarke and Fran Steacy in third.
