Australian Match Racing Championships day 2 – Intense battles

Australian Match Racing Championships 2011 Shane Smith
Australian Open and Women's Match Racing Championships, hosted by Southport Yacht Club, are currently underway.

Day two was 21 races of intense battle in the light to moderate breezes on the Gold Coast Broadwater today with the CYCA team of Ashlen Rooklyn, Tim Austin, Byron White and Ezra Pritchard topping the points table at the completion of the Round Robin phases.

The Southport Yacht Club's youth men's team of Jack Sherring, Coen Comadira, Fletcher Sewell and William Bates goes into the Semi Finals ranked second just one win behind the Rooklyn team, after five wins from six starts to top today’s round two.

A three way tie for third between current Queensland Champions from Noosa Yacht Club, lead by Klade Hauschildt, and the two Southport Yacht Club women's teams of Jessica Hansen and Sophie Lahey all matched for wins both on the points table and in the wins and losses against each other.

On count back it was Jessica Hansen and crew Stacey Jackson, Georgia Cronin and Melissa Turner finishing third and fellow squad members Sophie Lahey, Georgie Toner, Kodey Sherring and Ali Blundell taking the final semi finals spot. The two women's teams fought an intense battle today and that will continue tomorrow morning as they battle for the Women's Final to crown Australian Women's Match Racing Champions, before contesting the open semi finals. With both crews being the only losses for the Rooklyn crew, the semi finals are going to be tough to win through for all crews.

Tomorrows schedule will have a sail off for minor places before the Final and Petit Final on Friday where stronger breezes are predicted.

Results are available online.
