2015 Rolex Big Boat Series - More images by Chuck Lantz
by Chuck Lantz on 3 Oct 2015
Case in point, as another group of J-boats prepare for the rounding. Chuck Lantz

Photographer Chuck Lantz provided this gallery of images from the 2015 Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club and held on San Francisco bay.
One last look at the S&S 78' prom queen, Jorge Madden's Kialoa III. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
It's hard to believe that just a couple of hours ago, everyone in this photo was drifting around the start line, wondering if the wind would ever arrive. It apparently did. (Terrible pun) © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Gary Redelberger's Racer X, a Farr 36, hammering towards the top mark. They took first place in PHRF Sportboat. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
A small white ball in the water on the left, and a large white ball of spinnakers on the right. It took those boats five tries to get the shape just right for this shot. Honest. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Mark Kennedy's Flying Tiger 10M, Cento Miglia, pushing hard to the finish, next to Dorian McKelvy's J-111, Madmen, on the right. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Even with both eyes closed and one hand tied behind your back, it is impossible to take a bad photo of yachts as they approach the St. Francis finish line under spinnaker in the late afternoon. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Foredeck crew preparing for launch as they approach the mark outside the Gate. With the ratio of males and females working the pointy ends of race boats rapidly reaching parity, the term "bowman" has, thankfully, become yet another bit of ancient sailing jargon. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Barry Lewis's Chance leads part of the J-120 fleet back from the RBBS mark just outside the Golden Gate, framed by the Marin headlands. Chance finished second in their division. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Not so long ago, Rolex Big Boat Series spectators on the shoreline and at the St. Francis Yacht Club witnessed half a dozen or more boats the size of Kialoa III, tacking upwind towards the Golden Gate, within a few yards of the shore, missing each other by inches - and sometimes not. They weren't on foils, and they weren't super-fast, but they were absolutely amazing. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
Another big boat versus small boat mismatch, as Victor Wild’s ORR-A Division-winning TP 52, Bud, races to the finish line. ("Did anyone feel a slight bump?") © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
James Mullarney’s Wylie 42, Scorpio, about to be freight-trained by Kialoa III, though lucky shot-timing gives the illusion that Scorpio’s kite has bumped into Kialoa III’s. ... Sort of. © Chuck Lantz http://www.ChuckLantz.com
