Alistair Young named WA 2012 Junior Sailor of the Year

The annual Yachting WA awards night was held on Friday 11th May 2012 at the Royal Perth Yacht Club. During the ceremonies, the Junior Sailor of the Year was revealed. Nominees included Andrew Briggs – nominated by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Chris Charlwood- nominated by WA Optimist Dinghy Association, and Alistair Young - nominated by Fremantle Sailing Club.

Alistair Young was the winner. Alistair has had a stellar year in the Optimist Class. After qualifying for the World Championships in 2011, Alistair trained solidly and participated in many major regattas in both Australia and overseas.

Alistair finished 2011 and started 2012 achieving the best Australian result at the 2011 Optimist World Championship finishing 43rd, the second best ever result by an Australian. Alistair then participated in the World Optimist Team Racing Championship helping the team secure a ninth place.

Alistair followed this by a second place in the Australian Optimist National Championship wining the last seven races, and then helping the WA Team to win the Australian Optimist Team Race Championship.
