Madagascar
Madagascar conjures images of an unspoilt and fascinating natural environment. The world’s oldest island isolated for 65 million years, some ecologists refer to Madagascar as the eighth continent. A small fleet of monohull 36-41’ and catamarans up to a Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46 are now available to explore this pristine cruising ground. The base at Nosy Be in Marina Le Cratere will open in April 2008 and with direct flights from Paris and Rome is sure to be heavily booked.
Tioman (Malaysia)
Langkawi has long offered an interesting and varied cruising ground especially when combined with nearby Thailand.
Now Malaysia has a second new base at Tioman on the east coast in the South China Sea which is opening early in 2008. A newly completed marina offering all facilities will house a fleet of French built Hanse yachts 30-52’ as well as Fountaine Pajot and Catana catamarans from 43-47’.
Only a half days drive from Singapore, Tioman offers idyllic palm fringed beaches with a jungle interior that is of begging to be explored.
For those looking for the next new thing it is well worth considering.
Tuscany
While Corsica/Sardinia, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast are in increasing demand for Australians, those also looking for something different should consider Italy’s Tuscan Coast.
The Tuscan Islands dot the sea between Italy and Corsica and included Gorgona, Capraia, Elba and Pianosa to name a few.
The charter base at Scalino on the Italian mainland, offers a perfect departure point to explore these Islands; however the Italian coastline is a charter area in its own right. Ports such as Santa Margarita and of course Portofino, are elegant and sophisticated. Rose hued houses and restaurants line the quay is what in one of the world’s most exclusive harbours.
Anchoring off the Cinque Terre also offers a stunning background landscape.
Completing the cruising Triangle it is possible to visit Northern Corsica.
This northern tip from Bastia to Calvi offers a variety of anchorages and the contrast of a French experience.
Bareboats are available from 32’-54’ with the flagship Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 54 – equipped with teak decks, Radar, Bow thruster, Heating, Generator and TV.
