More images from the start of the Vendee Globe race which got underway at 1200UTC, watched by a crowd of 350,000 fans at Les Sables-d'Olonne on the western French coast.

The six foilers made a good start in the early running in moderate winds and flat seas. The fleet looks like it will be off to a good opening week at least in contrast to some previous short handed races, which has seen key boats knocked out soon after the start.
