A bitter, windless finale marked the final day of the Syracuse stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia a Vela.
Today, June 23, the highly anticipated InShore races were held hostage by a relentless calm that thwarted the efforts of the crews and the organizing committee, forced to surrender after hours of trying.
Morning hope
The day had begun under very different auspices. At 11:30, the race committee gathered the Waszp class athletes, confident in a light breeze from the first quadrant, estimated at between 9 and 9.5 knots. These were ideal conditions for the spectacular and extremely fast flying dinghies to glide across the water.
The wind trap and the four failed starts
The initial optimism, however, was dashed by the unstable weather. The wind began to drop intermittently, playing hide-and-seek with the racers. Four times the boats crossed the starting line with the right momentum, and four times they suddenly found themselves stuck in the middle of the gulf, forcing the judges to suspend the races one after the other.
A mockery beyond the time limit
The most frustrating moment occurred during the only attempt that seemed to have found the right pace. The athletes, fighting inch by inch against the exhausting calm, even managed to cross the finish line and complete the course. A hard-fought victory against the elements proved futile: the sudden drop in wind extended the time limit to such an extent that it triggered the overtime limit, effectively canceling the race.
Return to port
With the race course reduced to a motionless expanse, the committee had to declare the end of hostilities at 2:30 PM. The fleet thus made its final return to land, closing the Aretusean appointment without further upheavals in the rankings, but with the certainty that the sea, in the end, always dictates its rules.
