A day of great sport, adrenaline, and pure tactics unfolded today, June 21st, in the waters of Syracuse. The Sicilian stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia treated enthusiasts and onlookers to a breathtaking spectacle with the eagerly awaited Inshore Regattas.

The gulf transformed into a natural battlefield where the world's best sailors challenged each other with gybes and tacks, offering a breathtaking spectacle.

Waszp: four fiery trials and Alex Jones' triumph

The Waszp class boats kicked things off at 2:00 PM. Although the initial weather conditions had raised fears of the worst, the race committee made the most of a light but steady wind blowing from a 160-180 degree direction.

This scenario, which required extreme sensitivity at the helm and an impeccable reading of the race course, allowed four races to be completed. The races were extremely close, fought to the last meter, and characterized by constant changes in leadership. In the end, Alex Jones of Flushing Sailing Club emerged victorious and took the top step of the podium, thanks to a masterful performance of consistency and aggressiveness in rounding the mark.

WingFoil: the mocking wind stops the "Flyers"

The day was decidedly less fortunate for the spectacular WingFoil fleet. The athletes, who rely on "flight" over the water for their winning purpose, gathered on the race course throughout the afternoon, hoping for a strengthening breeze, which unfortunately never fully arrived.

Due to the wind being too light to allow the entire series to proceed as planned, the judges had to declare only one race valid. In this single, lightning-fast race, Riccardo Bevilacqua demonstrated clear superiority. The Italian Air Force athlete successfully tamed the challenging weather conditions, taking home a commanding victory that, albeit partial, confirms his extraordinary form.

The Figaro 3s' anticipation: the hunt for the night arrival

With the inshore action concluded, everyone's attention now turns offshore. There is great anticipation for the OffShore race, the grueling offshore race that pits the Figaro 3s against the long stretch from Taranto to Syracuse.

The boats are completing the final miles of their arduous ascent. Barring further drops in wind that could slow the fleet right at the finish line, the first boats are expected in port this evening, starting at 11:30 PM - midnight. A captivating nighttime finish is expected, which will decide the winners of one of the most historic and evocative stages of this Giro d'Italia.
