Grenada Welcomes the Viking Explorers Rally 2026

After weeks of ocean sailing, thousands of nautical miles, and months of preparation, the 9th edition of the Viking Explorers Rally has officially concluded in Grenada, marking another triumphant chapter for this distinctive Atlantic Rally.

The Viking Explorers Rally, founded in 2018, has steadily built an international reputation as a boutique ocean-crossing experience designed for sailors seeking both adventure and support. Unlike competitive races, the rally emphasizes preparation, safety, seamanship, camaraderie and top customer service, bringing together a carefully selected fleet of maximum 25 yachts and crews from across the globe.

Participants gathered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in December 2025 to prepare for departure, sharing training sessions, safety briefings, and social gatherings before embarking on their Atlantic passage. This year's edition proved especially memorable due to challenging Atlantic weather patterns that required careful decision-making and flexibility. For the first time in the rally's nine-year history, departures had to be postponed at multiple stages. The fleet's initial start from Las Palmas was delayed several days due to a series of storms affecting conditions offshore. Later, while regrouped in Cape Verde, captains once again faced unfavorable forecasts, leading to a second delay before beginning the transatlantic leg. As a result, the official Welcome Ceremony in Grenada was postponed by five days — the first time such a delay has occurred in the event's history. Organizers emphasized that the decision reflected the rally's core philosophy: safety first, always.

A defining feature that distinguishes the Viking Explorers from many other rallies is its consensus-based departure protocol. While official departure windows are scheduled, final confirmation is never fixed until approximately 48 hours beforehand, at the skippers briefing. The decision to sail is made collectively between organisers and captains, based on real-time meteorological analysis and shared judgment. Only when conditions are considered safe by the fleet as a whole does the rally depart. According to organizers and participants alike, this collaborative approach is a cornerstone of the rally's strong safety record and trusted reputation within the offshore sailing community.

Following final preparations and weather clearance, the fleet ultimately departed for the first leg towards Cape Verde, where crews regrouped before beginning the most demanding stage of the voyage — the transatlantic crossing to the Caribbean. The crossing tested navigation skills, endurance, teamwork, and resilience, as crews encountered changing weather systems, shifting trade winds, and the vast solitude of the open ocean. Throughout the passage, the rally's support network monitored progress and maintained communication with participants, reinforcing the event's commitment to safety and coordination at sea.

Upon arrival in Grenada, sailors were warmly welcomed by local authorities, marina staff, rally staff and fellow participants, reflecting the island's long standing maritime tradition and reputation for hospitality. For many crews, reaching the Caribbean marked the fulfillment of a lifelong dream — an achievement celebrated not only for the nautical accomplishment itself, but for the friendships and shared experiences forged along the journey.

The first boat to arrive was SY Agape, a catamaran Dolphin 460, after 12 days out at sea, with captain John Blakeman and crews Deb and Dana.

Welcome Ceremony Celebration at Chez Louis, Merveilles, Port Louis Marina

The Official Welcome Ceremony took place on February 13 at Chez Louis, Merveilles, in Port Louis Marina, bringing together crews, organizers, sponsors, and local representatives for an evening of recognition and celebration. Representing the Grenada Tourism Authority, Shanai St. Bernard, Manager of the Nautical Department, formally greeted the fleet and thanked participants for selecting Grenada and its sister islands Carriacou and Petite Martinique as their Caribbean destination. Zara Tremlett, Marina Manager of Port Louis Marina, congratulated sailors on completing their Atlantic crossing, acknowledging the skill and determination required to undertake such a voyage. Adding a cultural dimension to the evening, Jameson Noel of Mount Gay Rum shared insights into the history of the iconic Caribbean spirit and its ties to maritime heritage. Managing Director Oliver Solanas Heinrichs, joined by PR & Marketing Director Carlota Texeira, expressed gratitude to participants for helping create the supportive and collaborative atmosphere that defines the Viking Explorers experience. They emphasized that while the rally celebrates seamanship and adventure, its true success lies in the sense of community that develops among crews throughout the voyage.

Each crew was invited on stage to receive commemorative gifts from Viking Explorers and its partners, often sharing heartfelt reflections about their crossing and appreciation for fellow sailors. Many described the rally as both a personal milestone and a collective achievement made possible through teamwork, preparation, and mutual encouragement.

An Unforgettable Finale

Following the award presentations, guests enjoyed a special video featuring unseen images from the entire rally, allowing crews to relive memorable moments from their ocean passage. The celebration continued with a traditional steel pan band performance and cocktails under the Caribbean night sky, providing a festive and distinctly local conclusion to the transatlantic adventure.

Organisers extended sincere thanks to their partners and sponsors whose support helped make the event possible, emphasizing that the rally's success is built on strong cooperation between maritime professionals, tourism authorities, technical partners, and local businesses.

Looking Ahead - The 10th Anniversary

With the 2026 rally successfully completed, anticipation is already building for the next chapter. The 2027 edition will mark the 10th anniversary of Viking Explorers, a milestone that organizers confirm will be celebrated with special plans, expanded experiences, and unique commemorative moments both at sea and on arrival in Grenada. Interest has already surpassed expectations. Demand for participation has more than doubled compared to previous years, with applications reaching well into the 60 boat range. In keeping with the rally's philosophy of maintaining a close-knit fleet and high level of support, participation will remain limited, and the first 25 official invitations have already been issued to selected applicants. Organizers describe the upcoming anniversary edition as their most ambitious rally yet, promising an enhanced program, landmark celebrations, and an even stronger international fleet, setting the stage for what is expected to be a historic transatlantic event.
