Cadet UK National Championships at Brixham Yacht Club - Update

After a practice race on Sunday won by Will Shepherd and Joe Mycroft, the Cadet Nationals kicked off in earnest at Brixham on Monday 23rd August.

After two days of racing Hannah Carruthers and George Cox Oliff have a decent lead on the rest of the fleet with a net 6 points now that the discard has come into play. Second are Mish Collingridge and Rhona Enkel on 13, with Toby Bush and Kemmel Thorogood close behind on 14, but certainly within striking distance of the top two, both of whom used their discard with an OCS in the first race on Monday.

Leading the silver fleet and coming tenth overall at this point are Evan Harris and James Vellacott, but they too have close competition with Sarah McEwan and Holly Jones just one position further back and only 4 points adrift. And in Regatta fleet, who are starting with the main fleet and sailing the same length courses, the lead is held by Olivia McMorris and Phoebe Millar from Ava Roberts and Jack Dingwall.

So far we’ve seen the full range of conditions - shifty, medium strength winds out of the north up at Torquay, a bit of a drifter later on yesterday as the wind gave out on the third race of the day, and some proper breeze today bringing with it some steep waves from the East which became yet more challenging as the wind started to ease as the second race wore on.

Brixham Yacht Club has been its usual hospitable self as we knew it would be - there’s been plenty of off-the-water action to sit alongside the sailing with a treasure hunt around Brixham allowing the parents to get in a sneaky Pimms evening, and the prospect of games night on the green and a barbecue tonight still to come.

So there we are - we are five races into a ten race programme and there’s still everything to play for throughout the fleet. Today we’ve certainly seen the best of the English Riviera with beautiful sunshine and great sailing conditions. Long may that last!
