After two earlier cancellations Scarborough Yacht Club's Race No. 4, a phased Clas Start, took place on Sunday in perfect but gusty racing conditions underneath a dramatic sky that promised sun, squalls, and hailstones in equal measure.
Team of the Race mention has to go to the Leeds University Sailing Club members on board training yacht Miss Moneypenny, one of the Hunter 707 class. At 1:10pm, 20 minutes before race start, the yacht was knocked over by a gust of wind (see pic) and it took 1 - 2 minutes before the crew were able to get it upright. Scarborough lifeboat was alerted but did not launch. Not only did the trainee crew recover the yacht unaided, but started the race on time, and finished in third position.
As with the January race, the Race Station Bee Sharp placed the IRC and SYC classes on a triangular Course E pattern passing buoys 8, 6, 5, and 3 to port, and the 707 Class racers on course K, Buoys 8, 5, and 3, Easterly and back, passing buoys to port. The 707s did 3 laps, the other vessels on Course E did two. Course decisions are normally taken just prior to the start to take the latest sailing conditions into account. (A course map is attached.)
It was Commodore Roger Buxton's last flag ceremony today, so accompanied by Lady Commodore Julie Buxton, there was a bigger air of celebration in the club today, perhaps accompanied by a sense of an era coming to an end. The cheers shook the foundations of the lighthouse. A new Commodore will be voted in next month.
Scarborough Yacht Club congratulates Teams Vado, Black Sheep, and Dash, and gives special Team of the Race recognition to the Leeds University trainee crew on Miss Moneypenny for their valiant recovery from their spill, and subsequent 3rd place win.
