15 September 2019
Burghfield Sailing Club and the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre at Burghfield turned out in force for this year's Bart's Bash on 15th September 2019.
52 entries battled with light breezes on a very trying day for Race Officer Jason Pyke and his race team. An assortment of boats included a Tideway and a Funboat - you just never know what's going to turn up for Bart's! But people just keep turning out for this event which has resonance for all sailors.
Race 1 saw breezes varying between 3knts and much more! And you had to take the opportunities when they arose. Malcolm Perry in his Tideway sailed steadily throughout, took those opportunities, and squeezed a win by 18 seconds from Chris Jennings in his Solo.
Race 2, in a diminishing breeze, saw James and Alyshia Anderson come to the fore in their RS200, just 39 seconds in front of Wynn Kendrick in his Solo.
It's clear that our younger members see Bart's as an important event as 15 boats took to the water. And it was in a Firefly that Sammy Fell crewed by mum Trudie literally went home with the chocolates - first Junior and 11th overall. Second Junior was Rose Daser sailing her Optimist and deservedly going home with...erm..more chocolate!
And, most significantly, seven boats took to the water from the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre at Burghfield. It was Topper Argo's all the way in this fleet with Paul and Madison Weatherley taking first place with Kristof Jenkins and Jamie Hordern rocking up into second.
But it was most definitely a day for light weather specialists and canny opportunists. And the Bart's Bash 2019 winner overall - and much applauded - was Wynn Kendrick in his Solo with a 2nd and 3rd places.
Most importantly, participants contributed more than £400 to the Andrew Simpson Foundation to round off a very successful event at Burghfield Sailing Club.
